One of the major cuisines in the area of the culinary industry is of course the Chinese cuisine. It is needless to say that it has a lot of history to look back to. How awesome would it be if we get to know the history behind our favourite Chinese food?

The Basics of Chinese Food

For the people who come from Chinese origin, it can be said with closed eyes that they are very much fond of food. It is due to food that they get to spend a lot of time with each other and it being the centre of attraction at most gatherings.

The most common question when it comes to Chinese cuisine is the one that asks for the components of the basic Chinese meal. So, a basic Chinese meal constitutes of grains and dishes having vegetables or meat. To speak about the interesting parts of the history, we totally need to know more about the cutlery with which they have their food- chopsticks.

It can be surprising for a few people to know about the fact that in the beginning chopsticks were used to cook. Yes! They were used to stir the fire, serve the food to the people who would be having it. Later, as the rulers kept changing in China, slowly and steadily it became useful as the utensil with the help of which food is eaten and now chopsticks are used for both serving and eating the food.

Another very common utensil of the Chinese has a very interesting history to offer. The utensil is nothing else but the wok. It is noted that in the beginning when the wok was discovered then it was used for pre-cooking. Or rather, in simpler words, it was used to dry the grains that were later to be cooked.

In today’s time, as we see, the wok is used for a much more important purpose. It is now the utensil with the help of which we churn out various Chinese delicacies. With the help of the wok, today, we boil; stir fry, steam roast and even deep fry to prepare our food to eat.

The Evolution

Slowly and steadily throughout the years, we have seen the addition of ingredients such as peanuts, corns and even tobacco along with sesame, peas, onions and coriander introduced in the traditional Chinese cuisine. Now, whenever we think of Chinese cuisine, the first thing that comes in our mind is all these ingredients.

There are different types of authenticity of the Chinese food whenever we talk about it as they have originated from different regions. One has to keep in mind that typically in China, you get all types of food but in various regions, the importance of certain ingredients are more than the others.

Different Regions, Different Taste

For example, the southern cuisine comprises more of the rice products. On the other hand, flour products such as noodles and dumplings are more famous in the northern cuisine. Whenever you go out of China for having Chinese food, you will be able to see a good amalgamation of both the products.

Another very interesting information to add in the history of the Chinese cuisine has to be the fact that the noodles, which basically represent the Chinese cuisine these days, are around 4,000 years old and in the Neolithic age used to be made up of foxtail and broomcorn millet. The early dynastic times saw the evolving of flavour and texture with the help of the different seeds and the oils that have been derived from them.
